A tropical lake forms one continuous habitat for a fish population. The fish are not completely identical: individuals differ, for example, in body size, body shape and coloration.
Predatory fish also live in the lake. They preferentially capture animals that are easier to detect or catch in the respective habitat. At the same time, fish reproduce within each population; offspring resemble their parents but may possess new trait variants.
After geographic separation, model time advances automatically. Each stage lasts 45 seconds. The model pauses at time points 1 to 4: run the reproductive compatibility test and then continue the simulation manually.
Task: Observe the entire model run and compare the development of both areas. Record notable changes in the habitat displays and charts. Then explain your observations using the scientific terms gene flow, isolation, mutation and selection.
