Instructions
Use the two icons at the top left to switch between building with spheres and drawing with the pen. Your molecule is preserved when you switch.
Ball-and-stick model
Place atoms and groups: Select carbon, hydrogen or oxygen and tap an empty spot. Selecting C or O opens a group palette at the top left of the simulation: CH, CH₂, CH₃ or OH. Select a group, then place it in the field.
Drag a carbon chain: Select carbon without a preset group. Drag across an empty area: depending on the distance, this creates a chain of two to five C atoms with matching H atoms. A short tap still places just one C atom.
Edit bonds: Select Single, Double or Triple, then tap the two atoms in turn. Select None and tap both atoms to remove an existing bond. In Delete mode, tap an atom to remove it and its bonds, or tap a bond to remove just that bond.
Move the view: Drag an atom to move the connected molecule. To rotate, first select a bond type, then drag in an empty area. Zoom with the mouse wheel or a two-finger gesture. Selecting a bond type prevents accidentally drawing a carbon chain while rotating.
Display and measurements: Change the background if needed. Open Display for names, bond angles and bond lengths. After selecting angles or lengths, drag a rectangle around the area you want to measure.
View the Lewis structure: Enable Show preview. Click the small structure to enlarge it; click again to shrink it. The structure cannot be rotated.
Drawing mode
Write and connect: Select the pen icon. Write C, H and O and draw bond strokes between the letters. Two or three parallel strokes represent a double or triple bond. Pause briefly after drawing to allow recognition.
Extend the condensed structural formula: Recognised letters and bonds are arranged automatically. Drawn, bonded H atoms are grouped into labels such as CH₃, CH₂ or OH. You can add more atoms and bonds. Zoom the drawing with the mouse wheel or two fingers; use two fingers to pan as well. Unrecognised strokes remain available for correction.
Make corrections: Enable Erase and move over a stroke or bond. Erasing the H part of a group removes one H atom per erasing gesture; erasing its C or O character removes the entire group. Turn Erase off again to continue writing.
Choose a preview: Enable Show preview to reveal the Lewis structure and Ball-and-stick model buttons. Rotate the ball-and-stick model in the small window by dragging or using the arrow keys. The Lewis structure can be enlarged but cannot be rotated.
Continue building or start again: Use the molecule icon to return to building. In either mode, Reset clears the entire structure, including the drawing.
